Na een opleiding tot metaalontwerper aan een kunstschool in Düsseldorf nam hij Best & Lloyd over, het bedrijf van zijn vader in Birmingham. Hij ontwierp de bureaulamp Bestlite, die nog altijd wordt gemaakt.
